Bio Note: Adam Barrett is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science at the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK. The primary focus of his research is the use of mathematical methods to attempt to understand what is distinct about the particular neural structures and dynamics that give rise to conscious experience. He has made contributions to the Integrated Information Theory of Consciousness, as well as to the development of the application of Granger causality to infer information flow and connectivity in the brain. Prior to joining the Sackler Centre in 2009, Adam was a postdoc at the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation at the University of Edinburgh, during which time he worked mainly on synaptic plasticity and the neural basis of learning and memory. Adam obtained his PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Oxford in 2006 on the topic of string/M-theory.
