Bio Note: Heinz von Foerster was born in 1911. He studied physics at the Vienna Technical University. In 1944 he received a Ph.D. in physics at the University Breslau. After World War II he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he he became professor for signal engineering in 1951 and professor for biophysics in 1962. Most importantly, from 1958 until his retirement in 1975 he was director of the Biological Computer Laboratory (BCL). There, he provided a fruitful platform for many cognitive scientists and constructivists. Heinz von Foerster died on 2 October 2002 in Pescadero, California.
