Bio Note: Stephan Herminghaus obtained his PhD in Physics at the University of Mainz in 1989. In 1998 he became full professor at the University of Ulm. Today he is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen. In his research, he performs experiments, simulations, and analytic calculation to gain insight into phase transitions and other collective phenomena in complex and active matter. This includes systems as diverse as granular flows, biological matter, and traffic systems. His overarching interest is how a sustainable anthropocene may be organized.
